Quaker from Early Barry County

Quaker Settlement, about 1860 or early 1870 came to Barry County seeking a new home and important to remember the settlement has weathered the years and in 1960 there's still a Quaker settlement near Cassville. Quoting James B. Jefferson who lived in the Quaker settlement, "The early Christian sect includes, the Dunbars, Bonds, Bennets, Jones and two or three families of Hutchens and Mills who worshiped with the Quakers." Mr. Jefferson said further, "These Quakers are principled, progressive, honest and conscientious at all times. "A note of difference- these people use 'thee' and 'thou' in daily conversation and the central point of their teaching is the doctrine that an individual is personally directed to speak by the Holy Spirit, however, this custom has been greatly modified or abandoned." First Quakers soon erected a church house and platted a cemetery on grounds donated by Mr. Hutchens. Both church and school were held in the building in early days. In 1960 a new church building was built on a two-acre tract of land purchased from the Talbert farm, and named Quaker Church.
